The New Zealand Government has announced a significant development in its ongoing efforts to strengthen ties with China and support the tourism and business sectors. From November 2025, Chinese nationals holding valid Australian visitor, work, student, or family visas will be eligible to travel to New Zealand for up to three months using a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA)—eliminating the need to apply for a separate visitor visa.

This 12-month trial initiative is designed to make trans-Tasman travel more accessible and attractive for Chinese visitors, and reflects the importance of China as a key market for New Zealand. This change is expected to stimulate tourism, reinforce trade relationships, and provide easier access for family and friends to reconnect.

Key Details of the Policy Change:

  • Eligibility: Chinese nationals with valid Australian visitor, work, student, or family visas.
  • Travel Duration: Up to 3 months in New Zealand.
  • Entry Requirement: Must apply for and meet the criteria for a valid NZeTA.
  • Exclusions: Does not apply to individuals transiting through Australia only.
  • Trial Period: 12 months starting November 2025.

In parallel, the New Zealand Government is also investing in additional support mechanisms to streamline the visa process for Chinese tourists:

Processing Time Improvements:

As of June 2025, Chinese visitor visa applications are being processed within an average of 5 days.

These changes are part of a broader strategy to strengthen New Zealand’s relationship with China and foster growth in tourism, trade, and people-to-people connections.
